Coming soon: new bridges! Work is nearing completion on three new bridges that will open to traffic in the coming weeks. The new bridge over State Road 37 at Perry Road will open first. It’s expected to open to traffic late this week. The new bridges over S.R. 37 for Waverly and Egbert roads are expected to open later this month.

On Track Update: October 26, 2020

Drivers will begin seeing many of the 2020 improvements and projects wrapping up in the coming weeks as crews stay on track to reach the I-69 Finish Line. That includes the completion of work to widen State Road 39. Crews are improving S.R. 39 in advance of next year’s temporary closure of S.R. 37 in Martinsville.

Changing traffic patterns are expected in downtown Martinsville in the next couple of weeks. The I-69 Finish Line Project Team has been working closely with the City of Martinsville to accommodate the restriping work needed downtown to safely move more traffic during next year’s temporary closure of State Road 37 in Martinsville. The city’s ongoing water main improvement project provides a perfect opportunity for coordination.

The I-69 Finish Line Project Team wants to shine the spotlight this week on a longtime Martinsville teacher and volunteer who has dedicated her life to helping others. Ruth Rusie will celebrate her 102nd birthday on Tuesday. After retiring from the MSD of Martinsville, Rusie continued to promote and champion literacy outside of the classroom along with a host of other volunteer efforts.

Crews have been paving the way to major progress on State Road 39. The widening work that has been underway since spring is winding to a close. Expect crews to complete their work along S.R. 39 and Morton Avenue in the next couple of weeks. Pavement widening is complete and crews will soon finish final surfacing and permanent striping.

Progress on I-69 is visible throughout Martinsville and Morgan County, but motorists will see the progress move north next year. Construction will be underway throughout the I-69 corridor in Marion, Johnson and northern Morgan counties starting in early 2021 and continuing through late 2024.

On Track Update: September 21, 2020

Progress on I-69 Finish Line will mean some daytime intermittent traffic stoppages on State Road 37 this week. Drivers should plan extra travel time, expect possible delays and slow down in the area. Traffic will be stopped for up to 20 minutes at a time as large concrete beams are delivered for two bridges under construction.

Watch for changes on State Road 37 this week as I-69 Finish Line crews continue preparations for a big traffic shift next year. You’ll see construction barrels stretching from Martinsville north to S.R. 144. Drivers need to stay alert, slow down and be prepared for lane closures. Police are enforcing a reduced speed limit of 45 MPH for the safety of both motorists and highway workers.

Progress on access road and bridge construction along State Road 37 north of Martinsville means that drivers should watch for changing traffic patterns in the coming days. New access roads are also starting to come online. The realigned Twin Branch Road is opening in phases to provide property access north of S.R. 44. A new access road connecting Country Club Road to Morgan Road and Myra Lane could open as early as next week.
